Lillis’ Chocolate Cake

1/2 cup shortening (or margarine or butter)

1 1/2 cups sugar

2 eggs

1/2 cup sour milk (3/4 tsp. vinegar added to milk)

1/2 tsp. baking soda

2 squares unsweetened chocolate—place in a small bowl

1/2 cup boiling water (pour boiling water over chocolate, set aside to melt)

1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla

2 cups flour

Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs, beat well, then salt and vanilla, next melted chocolate-water mixture, mix well. Put sour milk into a one-cup measuring cup, add baking soda so mixture foams up. Add flour to egg mixture, alternating with sour milk-soda mixture, ending with flour. Pour batter into a greased and floured 9 inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees 20-25 minutes. (Test with a toothpick after 20 minutes—if just a few crumbs stick, take out of oven.
