Fred’s Soup

When Grandpa was on his own in the kitchen, he came up with this recipe. He was pretty proud of himself. I always got a phone call when he was making it.

1 pound ground beef

16 ounce can tomatoes

1/3 cup ketchup (his secret ingredient)

1/3 cup barley

3 carrots, sliced thin

3 stalks celery, sliced thin

1 1/2 tsp. basil dash of garlic powder

1/2 tsp. pepper

1 tsp. seasoned salt

1 bay leaf

Brown ground beef in a large sauce pan, drain fat. Add 6 cups water and the rest of the ingredients. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer one hour. Even better the next day.
