Marian’s Chocolate Boiled Frosting

One of Mom’s longtime friends, Marian Norfolk, passed this recipe along. I remember eating it on marble cake.

2 squares unsweetened chocolate

1 1/2 cups sugar

1 T. milk

2 T. Crisco

2 T. butter (If I were making it today, I’d use 4 T. butter instead and skip the Crisco)

1 T. white corn syrup

1/2 tsp. salt

Put all ingredients into the top of a double boiler, Heat over low temperature (water in bottom pot should be simmering) until chocolate melts. Turn up heat until mixture begins to boil. Boil one full minute, then take off heat, cool for a few minutes, beat 3-4 minutes with electric mixer until it’s of spreading consistency.
